Change DNS records at HostGator

Shared host, also part of Newfold Digital. DNS is edited in the customer portal or cPanel.

Where the DNS settings live

  1. Sign in to the HostGator customer portal and open Domains.
  2. Click the domain, then Manage DNS (or open cPanel → Zone Editor).

Adding a record

  1. Click Add Record, choose the type, and fill in name and value.
  2. Save the record.

Editing or deleting a record

  1. Click the pencil/Edit control on the row, change the value, and save.
  2. Use the bin icon to delete.

Changing the nameservers

  1. From the domain page open Nameservers → Change.
  2. Enter the new nameservers and confirm.

Gotchas at HostGator

  • The portal DNS editor and cPanel Zone Editor can both show the zone; use one consistently to avoid confusion.
  • Only works while the domain uses HostGator nameservers.

After you save

DNS changes aren't instant. Resolvers keep the old answer until the previous record's TTL expires, so a record with a 4-hour TTL can take 4 hours to change everywhere. Use the Route Planner's live check to see what the world sees, and the troubleshooting page if it still looks wrong after the TTL has passed.
