Change DNS records at WP Engine

Managed WordPress host. It does not register domains; you point DNS at it.

Where the DNS settings live

  1. Sign in to the WP Engine User Portal.
  2. Choose the environment, then Domains to see what WP Engine expects.

Adding a record

  1. WP Engine gives you the target values — you add the records at your registrar or DNS host.
  2. For the root domain use the A record IP shown in the portal (or a CNAME/ALIAS to the wpengine.com hostname if your provider supports it).
  3. For www, add a CNAME to yourinstall.wpengine.com.

Editing or deleting a record

  1. Edit the records wherever your DNS is hosted, then re-check the portal for a green status.

Changing the nameservers

  1. Only relevant if you opt into WP Engine's managed DNS; otherwise leave nameservers with your DNS provider.

Gotchas at WP Engine

  • WP Engine will not issue an SSL certificate until the DNS records resolve to them.
  • Adding the domain in the portal and adding the DNS record are two separate steps — both are required.

After you save

DNS changes aren't instant. Resolvers keep the old answer until the previous record's TTL expires, so a record with a 4-hour TTL can take 4 hours to change everywhere. Use the Route Planner's live check to see what the world sees, and the troubleshooting page if it still looks wrong after the TTL has passed.
